Overview

Roadway lighting design is a key component in many roadway design projects. It is important for designers in all areas of roadway design to understand the basics of roadway lighting design.
This course will provide a history and requirements for use in roadway lighting design. Lighting design for various roadway classifications will be discussed. Conventional lighting equipment, such as light sources, luminaires, luminaire supports and bracket arms will be presented. Requirements for average initial illumination level and uniformity ratio for conventional and high mast lighting will be provided. Design criteria will be discussed and referenced to the appropriate manual. Light pole spacing arrangements and IES light distributions will be discussed as to how they affect lighting. Even though various off-the-shelf computer programs are available to determine light pole spacing, the original basic calculations for spacing will be included in this course.

Course Outline This Lighting Design course discusses the purpose and objectives of roadway lighting. Analyzing lighting needs on the various roadway classifications are discussed. Lighting justification is also included.
The following conventional lighting equipment is described:

  • · light sources
  • · luminaries
  • · luminaire supports
  • · bracket arms

The following conventional and high mast light pole requirements are defined:

  • · average initial illumination levels
  • · uniformity ratios

Also included are sign lighting and underdeck lighting requirements. Maintenance of existing lighting during construction, voltage drop criteria, and grounding requirements are also included.
Design criteria is discussed and referenced to the appropriate manual. Light pole spacing arrangements and IES light distributions are discussed as to how they affect lighting. Even though various off-the-shelf computer programs are available to determine light pole spacing, the original basic calculations for spacing are included in this course.
The course is designed to provide a basic knowledge of Lighting Design from which an engineer can have a better understanding of the requirements of roadway lighting..

SLSTECH System Requirements

To run our system effectively you should, as a minimum, use the system components listed on this page. If you do not, the system may still work but some functionality may be lost. Workplace IT environments' internal configurations can also restrict the functionality of our system. Access to content may be affected, as may the possibility of uploading files. File size limitations may also apply. Workplaces may also have older versions of software, and our system may not perform well with these.

Operating system

  • Recommended: Windows 7, 10, Mac OSX Sierra, iPad IOS10

Internet speed

  • Use a broadband connection (256 Kbit/sec or faster—this will ensure that you can view videos and online presentations) through USB wireless modem, ADSL, T1/T2, fibre optic or cable.

  • Dial-up access will be significantly slower, and we do not recommend it for using our system.

Internet browsers

    Compatible browsers include:

  • Google Chrome 32 bit version 50 or later (recommended for optimal compatibility, this has been thoroughly tested on Windows)

Safari 10 or later (recommended for optimal compatibility, this has been thoroughly tested on Mac)

Note that add-ons and toolbars can affect any browser's performance.

  • MS Internet Explorer is not recommended
